Virtues of Imam Ali in verse 3 of Surah Ma’idah

Today I completed your religion and perfected my blessings to you, and I chose Islam [as a] religion for you.

Cause of revelation of the verse:

In descent of this verse in farewell pilgrimage there is agreement between muslims. Many knew its cause of revelation  in (event of) Ghadir Khumm and some sunni scholars like Ibn-e-kathir in his two historical-interpretational books meaning third volume of Tafsir-ol-quran-al-azim and fifth volume of Al-bedaye va-nahaye knew its descedent at the day of Arafa. Of course in first volume of Alkafi by Koleyni and first volume of Tafsir-al-ayashi two of shia scholars too, with pointing to guardianship (velayat) of Ali-ibn-e-abitaleb knew day of Arafa as the place of descedent which as Majlesi says is weak and its text is manipulated and as Khoyee says in fourth volume of Rejal-ol-hadith dictionary it has the biographical evaluation problem. Amini in second volume of Al-ghadir too, by exploring shia agreement believes the Perfection verse has descended whether in Ghadir (Khumm) or somedays later.

Ibn-e-kathir  and Syuti knew the narrattions of descedent of Perfection verse at the (event of) Ghadir Khumm weak  and Amini in first volume of Al-ghadir too, by biographical evaluation exploring of documents of sunni narrations said according to sunni criteria   they are reliable. Among these (scholars) Ameli in thirty first volume of Al-sahih men sirat-o-nabi-al-azam believes this verse has sent to God’s messenger two times, first time at the day of Arafa which bacause      prophet was worried about announcing that, Tabligh (missionary) verse was descended and God has guaranteed that there would be no problem , then at the (event of) Ghadir Khumm  again it was sent to him.

Sheikh Mofid in the first volume of Al-ershad has wrote prophet Mohammad (PH) after finishing his last Haj, in the way back, at the area named Ghadir Khumm, gathered muslims and in an oration introduced Imam Ali (AS) as the leader (Vali) of muslims and his successor.  After oration muslims sweared allegiance with Imam Ali (AS), then the Perfection (Ekmal)  verse has descended and announced the perfection of religion. Great scholar Amini first volume of Al-ghadir and Hussaini milani in eight volume of nafahat-ol-azhar fi kholase abaghat-ol-anvar narrated from Mir hamed hussain in abaghat-ol-anvar  that with searching in sunnis’ books there are many evidents of their scholars to acknowledge and confirm the descedent of this verse about I mam Ali (AS) and (event of) Ghadir Khumm. Besides, there is disagreement between Islamic scholars in the meaning of perfection of religion too . for example Aloosi in the third volume of Rooh-ol-maani knew meaning of perfection as descedent of all verses of rulings while as Tabatabayi in the third volume of Al-mizan said with regarding the pointing to making the enemies of Islam disappointed, this view is not acceptable because the perfection of rulings could not be the cause of protecting religion and making infidels disappointed. Om the other side he says with descending this verse, voiding the verses of rulings did not ended and in other verses of this sura other rulings were told too. Tabarsi in the third volume of Majma-ol-bayan knew referring shias to the narrations of cause of revelation of the verse from shia Imams the reason of saying the perfection with announcing guardianship (Velayat) and successority of Amir-ol-momenin after prophet Mohammad (PH).
