Verse:

وَالْفَجْرِ

Translation:

By the Fajr (break of the day)

Sura Fajr, verse 1

part 1

Explanation of the verse:

Huseyni shahabd-ol-azimi in Athna ashari interpretation explains about this verse:

والفجر (by the Fajr (break of the day) means swear to Fajr (break of the day). This swear has some aspects:

  1. The first morning which appears like a pillar from horizon; this is the time of praying for friends.
  2. The whiteness of second morning; which is the time of prayer and gathering of servants (of God).
  3. The dawn of Arafe day (second day of Hajj pilgrimage and the day before sacrifice day); in which there are tasks of praying for Hajj pilgrims.
  4. The morning of Aid-al-adha (feast of sacrifice).
  5. The first day of [period of] judgmental day.
  6. The explosion of graves and resurrection of creatures.
  7. The morning of Friday.
  8. Fajr (break of the day) points out to coming out of water from fingers of Prophet Muhammad (PH); when he was in the war and the army of Muslims were 12 thousands. They supplicated for water because of being very thirsty and told: ((O Prophet of God (PH)! May our body and life be sacrificed for God and Prophet of God (PH)! But if we die, infidels will get happy.)) The Prophet (PH) asked for a bowl and put his holy finger in it. God pumped 4 springs from his finger, the same as pumping water from a spring, and the whole army drank enough water.
  9. Pumping of water from springs.
  10. Emerging of Prophet Saleh (AS)’s camel from mountain.
  11. Pumping of water from Moses (AS)’s stone.

But Mohsen qeraati in volume 10 of Noor interpretation narrates from Al-borhan interpretation that in a Hadith, Fajr (break of the day) has been meant as Imam Mahdi (AJ), and it is told: ((الفجر هوالقائم علیه السلام (Fajr (break of the day) is the very Qaem (AJ)); thus the dark night of oppression and corruption will be eliminated by (coming of) dawn of his rising.

part 2

Explanation of the verse:

Seyyed abd-ol-huseyn tayeb also, has written in Atyab-o-tebyan that:

There are lots of narrations about the meaning of Fajr (break of the day) and Layali ashr (10 nights):

  1. Fajr (break of the day) is Qaem (AJ) and Layali ashr (10 nights) are Imam Hasan (AS) to Imam Askari (AS).
  2. Fajr (break of the day) is Qaem (AJ) and Layali ashr (10 nights) is first decade of Z-el-hajje which is the complement of Moses (AS)’s Miqat (appointed time); God states in Quran: و اتممناها بعشر اعراف (and [we] completed [the period] with 10 [nights]) (Sura A’raf, verse 142)
  3. Fajr (break of the day) is Ramadan and Layali ashr (10 nights) is nights of last decade of it which the night of Qadr is among them.
  4. Fajr (break of the day) is Yom-o-nahr (the day in which, pilgrims should go round Ka’be 7 times) and Ashr (10) is Z-el-hajje.
  5. Fajr (break of the day) is Muharram which is the beginning of the year and Ashr is decade of Muharram which Ashura is among it.

Etc.

Writer’s opinion: all of them are subjective interpretations and have no validity. Fajr (break of the day) is the very morning which breaks the darkness of night. There are two kinds of Fajrs (break of the day: the false Fajr (break of the day), in which the vertical light appears and true Fajr (break of the day), in which the whiteness of morning expands. The latter is the real beginning of the day and in fasting it is needed to start avoiding [things which is forbidden while fasting]. Layali ashr (10 nights) it is not improbable to be the very decade of Z-el-hajje; God knows better.

It is written in volume 24 of Behar-ol-anvar, volume 18 of Ahl-e-bayt interpretation, Tavil-ol-ayat-o-zahera by Estarabadi and Al-borhan interpretation that: Jaber has narrated from Imam Sadeq (AS) that he stated: ((in words of the honored and almighty God, والفجر (by the Fajr (break of the day) is Qaem (AJ). Ibn-e-shahrashoub in first volume of Al-manaqeb narrated from Imam Baqer (AS) that about the interpretation of the verse والفجر و لیال عشر (by the Fajr (break of the day) and [by] the 10 nights stated: ((O Jaber! The meaning of والفجر (by the Fajr (break of the day) is my ancestor, Prophet of God (PH).))
