In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
Verse:
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللهِ عَلَى الْكاذِبينَ
Sura Al-e-emran, verse 61
Translation:
When after knowledge and awareness which came to you, (again) some people struggle with you about Jesus, say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Mobahele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.))
Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:
Johari in Al-saha’h knows the meaning of Mobahele as cursing others. Tabarsi in second volume of Majma-ol-bayan has written that Mobahele verse and its previous verses are in response to Jews from Najran and tells the story as: a group of Jews with their leader came to speak with prophet (PH) about his claim of prophecy. Prophet (PH) after introducing himself, told about Jesus (AS) that he is a servant of God’s servants. They did not accept and knew the Jesus’s born without father as the reason of his divinity and after that verse 59 of sura Al-e-emran has revealed that: ((the example of Jesus for God, is like Adam who made him from soil.)) Because Jews from Najran still insisted on their belief, prophet (PH) by order of God invited them to Mobahele(cursing others) and they requested respite until tomorrow from that day. When the day reached, prophet (PH) went his children and his son-in-law, but because Jews saw prophet (PH) and his companions’ seriousness and sincerity feared of God’s punishment and with advice of their leader did not accept Mobahele. They made peace with prophet (PH) and required to stay in their religion by paying tax (instead of conversion to Islam) and prophet (PH) accepted. Sheykh Mofid in first volume of Al-ershad wrote the date of happening Mobahele and revealing the verse as 24th of Ze-l-hajje of the ninth Hejri year which is known as A’m-ol-vofoud. In second volume of Osoul-e-ka’fi it is narrated from Imam Sadeq(AS) that the time of Mobahele happened between dawn and rising of sun
Zamakhshari, Fakhr ra’zi and Beyza’vi 3 persons of great Sunni interpreters respectively in Tafsir Al-kasha’f, Tafsir kabir ra’zi and Tafsir Anva’r-al-tanzil va asra’r-al-tavil along with almost all Shia interpreters like Tabarsi in second volume of Majma-ol-baya’n, Sadough in first volume of Elal-ol-shara’ye until Taba’taba’I in third volume of Al-miza’n said the meaning of verse from ((ابناءنا))
(our sons) are Hasan(AS) and Hussain(AS) and meaning of ((نساءنا)) (our women) is Fateme(SA) and meaning of ((انفسنا)) (ourselves) is Imam Ali(AS); the 4 persons who along with prophet (PH), made up 5 persons of Aba’(under the cloak). In answering to the problem that mentioned examples are singular or dual and the verbs used in the verse are all plural, Maka’rem shira’zi in second volume of Tafsir nemoone says at contract level sometimes words are said plural to collate on all examples but at operational level may example be restricted to one person and this exclusiveness in examples has no disagreement with being general of the issue; for instance in contract they write that responsible of doing the contract are signers of it or their children while it is possible that one of the sides has just one or two children and this is not in disagreement with setting up the law or contract in plural words. On the other side Taba’taba’I in Al-miza’n about this has written using plural verb for singular or dual examples is not new, and in Quran other instances can be seen that the verse according to its cause of revelation is about one person but plural verb was used; like Zaha’r verse in Sura Moja’dele.
These narrations has been written in detail in Beha’r-ol-anva’r volume 21 and third volume of Al-mana’gheb. In second volume of Tafsir ahl-e-bayt also some points is gathered about this.
One of the superiorities of Ali-ib-e-abitaleb is that prophet (PH) in this happening said about him in the status of ((انفسنا)) which means ourselves.

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:
In noor-ol-thaqakeyn and second volume of Al-khesa’l and also in volume 31 of Beha’r-ol-anava’r it is narrated from Makhool that Imam Ali (AS) has stated: ((among prophet (PH)’s companions, those who memorize thing well know that among them there is no one with a merit unless I had a share in it and I was superior to him but I have 70 merits which no one has a share of it.)) I said: ((o Amir-ol-momenin (AS)! Inform me of those merits.)) He said: ((Jews claimed to do Moba’hele with prophet (PH), God revealed this verse:
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ

Here my soul is prophet (PH)’s soul and the meaning of women is Fateme (SA) and of sons are Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS). Then Jews people got regretful and asked prophet (PH) to forgive them, he accepted for the sake of the one who descended Torah to Moses (AS) and Quran to prophet (PH). If they have done Moba’hele with us, all of them would be disfigured as monkeys and pigs.))
Sheykh tousi in Al-ama’li and, following him,Majlesi in volumes 10 and 69 of Beha’r-ol-anava’r narrated from Imam Sajjad (AS) that when Imam Hasan (AS) made peace with Moa’viye, raised and went to pulpit and said: ((… Alhamdulillah (God) gave a share in prophet (PH)’s prominences and anything which made prophet (PH) pure from and expelled him, made us pure from and expelled us. This prominence is grace which God has given us and is a superiority on other people which he gave us. God when proplr processing Bibles denied him (prophet (PH)), stated:
فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللهِ عَلَى الْكاذِبينَ
(say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Mobahele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.)) )
Prophet (PH) took my father as the meaning of ourselves (our souls) and my brother and me as the meaning of our sons and my mother as the meaning of our women among all people with himself for Moba’hele; so we are his family and his flesh and blood and soul. We are from him and he is from us.

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:
Another narration in volumes 10, 35 and 45 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r and also in Al-fosool-ol-mokhta’ra and second volume of Tafsir ahl-e-bayt speaks of a conversation between Imam Reza (AS) and Mamoon which is narrated that one day Mamoon told to Imam Reza (AS): (( explain the greatest prominence of Amir-ol-momenin (AS) which a proof from Quran indicate it for me.)) Imam Reza (AS) stated: ((the prominence of Moba’hele that God in Quran states:
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللهِ عَلَى الْكاذِبينَ
(When after knowledge and awareness which came to you, (again) some people struggle with you about Jesus, say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Moba’hele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.))) Prophet (PH) took Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) who were his children and Fateme (SA), which here is meant as our women, and also Amir-ol-momenin (AS) who was supposed as his soul for Moba’hele. According to verse of Quran it got proved that there was no one more worthy than prophet (PH) among people of the world; consequently there is no one more worthy than prophet (PH)’s soul among people of the world according to the verse.)) Mamoon said: (( isn’t it that in this verse God has said ابناء(sons) in plural form but just took two of his sons and also said نساء(women) in plural form but prophet (PH) just took Fateme (SA); Why it cannot be claimed that the meaning of انفسنا (ourselves or our souls) is really prophet (PH) himself not anyone else? Consequently the prominence you used of this verse would not be proved.)) Imam Reza (AS) stated: ((your claim is not correct because he (prophet (PH)) calls another person not himself! As commander orders to other person not to himself! And this is not correct that prophet (PH) may have called himself as he cannot command to himself! When prophet (PH) did not participated no man other than Imam Ali (AS) in Moba’hele we find out that the soul of prophet (PH) in this verse is Amir-ol-momenin (AS) and (God) has bestowed this prominence in Quran to him.)) Mamoon said: ((when there is an answer, the question will be solved.))
The first volume of Oyoun-e-akhba’r-ol-reza, second volume of Kashf-ol-ghame, second volume of Al-ehteja’j, volume 93 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, Tafsir noor-ol-thaqaleyn and also in Al-ekhtesa’s, Aboo-hamed ha’ni narrates from his father and he narrates from Imam Kazem(AS): (( I went to Haroon…)) he said: ((why you ordered public and nobles to ascribe you to prophet (PH) and call you prophet (PH)’s sons while you are Imam Ali (AS)’s children and man is ascribed to his father and the origin of seed is from father and Fateme (SA) is the other side and prophet (PH) is your grandfather from your mother’s side…)) I said: ((this holy verse:
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللهِ عَلَى الْكاذِبينَ
(When after knowledge and awareness which came to you, (again) some people struggle with you about Jesus, say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Moba’hele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.))); no one has claimed that prophet (PH) in Moba’hele (cursing each other) with Jews, took someone other than Imam Ali (AS), Fateme (SA), Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) with himself and put them under his cloak. So the meaning of ابناءنا(our sons) are Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS), the meaning of نساءنا(our women) is Fateme (SA)and meaning of انفسنا(ourselves or our souls) is Ali-ibn-e-abita’leb (AS).))

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:
Sheykh sadough in Al-ama’li narrates that Imam Reza in Marv entered the meeting of Mamoon which there were some scientists in it…
Mamoon said: ((do family (of prophet (PH)) have any superiority on others?)) Imam (AS) stated: ((God has disclosed the superiority of family (of prophet (PH)) in his strong book.)) Mamoon said: ((it is said which point of Quran?)) Imam Reza (AS) stated: ((God made family of AdaM, Noah and Abraham on other people of the world. They were children (and ancestry) who (from the view of purity, virtue and superiority) some of them were taken from some others. (Sura Al-e-emran, 33 and 34).)) Scholars said: ((does God interpreted choosing and appointing?)) He stated: ((God obviously has interpreted choosing in 12 verses of Quran more over to the interior of Quran. And thirdly, when God defines pure and chaste people commands to prophet (PH) in Moba’hele verse to invocation and imploration. In this verse:
فَمَنْ حَاجَّكَ فيهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَأَبْناءَكُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَكُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ اللهِ عَلَى الْكاذِبينَ
(When after knowledge and awareness which came to you, (again) some people struggle with you about Jesus, say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Moba’hele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.)) prophet (PH) for Moba’hele demonstrated Imam Ali (AS), Imam Hasan(AS), Imam Hussain(AS) and Fateme(SA) and made their souls conjoined to his soul. Do you know what the meaning of انفسنا و انفسکم (ourselves or our souls and yourselves or your souls) is? Scholars said: ((the meaning is the prophet (PH)’s self (or soul).)) He stated: ((the meaning of soul of prophet (PH) is Imam Ali (AS). One of its reasons is the quotation of prophet (PH): ((the sons of Valie should quit this action otherwise I will send a person to overbear them who is like my soul (or self).)) it means Imam Ali (AS) and the meaning of ابناءنا (our sons) in the verse are Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS) and the meaning of women is Fateme (SA). This is the prominence which no one can achieve it and is a status which no one can reach it because it has put the Imam Ali (AS)’s soul (or self) the same as prophet (PH)’s soul (or self).
This narration is also written in volume 25 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, first volume of Oyoun-e-akhba’r-ol-reza, Besha’rat-ol-mostafa’, Tohaf-ol-oghoul and Noor-ol-thaghaleyn. In Noor-ol-thaghaleyn it is narrated from Imam Ali (AS) in continue that prophet (PH) that day addressed me and stated: ((O Ali! Anyone who kills you kills me and anyone who makes you angry makes me angry and anyone says bad words to you says bad words to me; because you are my soul. Your spirit is from my spirit and your clay is from my clay.))

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:
It is written in volume 37 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r that prophet (PH) stated: ((God has never made a woman equal to a man unless Fteme (SA) with Imam Ali (AS) and joining her to him. She is the woman who is superior to all men and beside her, the status of (Imams) Hasan and Hussain (AS) and joining them to two superior persons with miracle power, (Imam) Ali (AS) and Fateme (SA) where entered them in the group of people doing Moba’hele( cursing each other).)) Also prophet (PH) stated: ((God has joined Fateme (SA) to (Imam) Ali (AS) in attesting to Mohammad (PH) and joined (Imams) Hasan and Hussain (AS) to them.)) The almighty God stated: ))فَمَنْ حَاجَّکَ فِیهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما جاءَکَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ فَقُلْ تَعالَوْا نَدْعُ أَبْناءَنا وَ أَبْناءَکُمْ وَ نِساءَنا وَ نِساءَکُمْ وَ أَنْفُسَنا وَ أَنْفُسَکُمْ ثُمَّ نَبْتَهِلْ فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ الله عَلَی الْکاذِبِین.((
(When after knowledge and awareness which came to you, (again) some people struggle with you about Jesus, say: ((let us we invite our children and you invite your children, we invite our women and you invite your women, and we invite ourselves (and the one who is the same as ourselves) and you invite yourselves; then do Moba’hele (and curse each other) and pray for the curse of God on liars.))) The children were (Imams) Hasan and Hussain (AS) who prophet (PH) brought them and put them in front of himself like two baby lions. The meaning of women, was Fateme (SA) who who prophet (PH) brought her and put her behind himself like a female lion and souls (selves) in Moba’hele verse was Ali-ibn-e-abita’leb who prophet (PH) brought him and put him right side of himself like a male lion and he himself sat like a lion on the floor and told to people of Najra’n: ((now let us do Moba’hele (cursing each other). فَنَجْعَلْ لَعْنَتَ الله عَلَی الْکاذِبِین (and pray for the curse of God on liars.) )) Prophet (PH) told to God: ((O God! He is my soul (self) and he is equal to my soul (self) to me. O God! She is my women and the best of women in the world, these two are my children and my daughter’s children and I fight with the ones who fight with them and I am in peace with the ones who make peace with them.)) At this moment the almighty God defined veracious people from liars and made Mohammad (PH), Imam Ali (AS), Fateme (SA) and (Imams) Hasan and Hussain (AS) the most veracious among truthful people and the best of believers. Mohammad (PH) is the best of men in the world and Imam Ali (AS) is his soul (self) and the best of men in the world after him, Fateme (SA) is the best of women in the world and Imams Hasan and Hussain (AS) are the chiefs of youth people f paradise with the exception of two cousins of Jesus (AS) and John (AS) that God has never joined a kid to men with perfect wisdom unless these 4 persons: Jesus (AS), John (AS) and Imams Hasan and Hussain (AS).
