يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ فَإِن تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى الله وَالرَّسُولِ إِن كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَحْسَنُ تَأْوِيلاً

Sura Nesa, verse 59

 

Translation:

O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey  your Prophet and your guardians of matters; so anytime you have disagreement in your (religious) matters, if you have faith to God and judgmental day, present it to your God (‘s book) and your Prophet (‘s tradition). This is better and has well ending.

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:

Seyyed abd-ol-hoseyn tayeb in volume 5 of Atyab-o-tebya’n has written firstly the phrase يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ (O believers!) is not specific to Vila’yat (guardianship) toward believers; since God and Prophet (PH) and Ol-ol-amr (guardians of matters) have general guardianship on whole people of the world, rather it is because believers admit Vila’yat (guardianship) and buy into it  and someone other than them do not admit it and from this word it can be inferred that anyone who does not acknowledged Vila’yat (guardianship) is out of (group of) believers whether he/she is infidel or is called Muslim.

And secondly, the word أَطِيعُواْ الله (Do obey) is not a Molavi (ascribed to Vali (guardian).) matter and Molaviat (being ascribed to Vali (guardian).) has not been applied in it and will not be applied since succession would be needed and it is impossible and is rather a directive issue stand to wisdom; rationally it is obligatory to obey God, because he is creator and supplier and any grace that reaches anyone is from absolute bountiful and also obeying Prophet (PH) is obligatory stand to wisdom so he stated: ((أَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ)) (do obey Prophet (PH)) since what Prophet (PH) says, is from God: ((وَ ما يَنطِق‌ُ عَن‌ِ الهَوي‌ إِن‌ هُوَ إِلّا وَحي‌ٌ يُوحي)) (he does not speak from some whim, it is merely inspiration that is revealed (to him)) Al-najm, verse 3 and 4. There is no slip, forgetfulness, error and mistake in him, he is pure from all sins and from such kinds of things; since wisdom knows obeying him the same as obedience of God.

And thirdly, the interpretation which public interpreters have about أُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ(your guardians of matters) is wrong and invalid; whether they are commander and king or they are scholars.

The commanders after wisdom sees vice and oppress and aggression and plenty of these kinds of things, orders to obligatory of disagreement with them not obligatory of obeying them. How it can order to obey Yazid, Ommiades, Bani-marva’n, Bani-abbas and the same while obeying them is the same as disagreement with God and causes paradox with obeying God? And for scholars, granted they are just and their perceptions are according to true documents and not with analogy and approving, surely they are not free from mistake, error, forgetfulness and rather not knowing many laws; how wisdom can order the obligation and necessity of obeying them while there is probability of being the mentioned kinds of problems in them? Rather Ol-ol-amrs (guardians of matters) should be the ones who their command is the same as God’s command and there is no probability of lie, mistake, error and forgetfulness in them in order to wisdom can order to necessity of obeying them and this is specific to Masoums (infallible Imams (AS)) and the status of infallibility is an inward issue and no one knows it unless God; so God should determine Ol-ol-amr (guardian of matters). Moreover, the one who God knows as owner of matters and mentions obeying him the same as obedience of God and Prophet (PH), should be a person who God has mentioned him as owning the matters not the ones who with force or with deceit and falsification became dominant and commander; otherwise obeying Pharaoh, Nimrod, Shadad, people like Kasra’, like Pharaoh and despots would be needed (we take refuge to God from spitefulness and prejudice.)

In second volume of Osoul ka’fi by Koleyni, volume 65 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r by Majlesi, Al-borha’n fi tafsir-el-Quran by Bahra’ni, For a’t-ol-koufi and Reja’l-el-keshi by isa-ibn-e-yase it is narrated that: ((I said to Imam Sadeq (AS) that: ((what are the elements of Islam which the almighty God has founded his pleasing religion based on them and no human being is able to default and neglect in recognizing them? The elements which anyone defaults in recognizing them, his/her religion would be corrupted and her/his deeds would not be accepted and anyone puts them in practice, his/her religion would be corrected and her/his deeds would be accepted and if he/she does not know something, the ignorance toward that thing, would be any harm for her/him.)) He stated: ((yes, I swear that there is no God other than the unique God.  Having faith to Prophet (PH), confess to what has been sent from God and paying the right of the wealth, which is Zaka’t (alms), and admitting the guardianship which God has commanded to; which means Vila’yat (guardianship) of the family of Prophet Mohammad (PH).)) I said: ((is there any superiority in the issue of Vila’yat (guardianship) that should be considered?)) he stated: ((yes, God states: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters.) And the Prophet of God (PH) stated: ((anyone who dies and does not recognize the Imam (AS) of his age, he/she has died in paganism (condition).))

Majlesi in volume 57 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r has narrated from Ja’ber-ibn-e-abdollah ansa’ri who narrated from Prophet (PH) that about Ali (AS) stated: ((swear to the one who my life is in his hand, I have mission to order you to swear allegiance with him and obey him; so do swear allegiance with him and obey his commands that about it, has been revealed that: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters.) Ja’ber said: ((we have swear allegiance with him. Prophet of God (PH) stated: ((if you stand firm in method of Ali (AS) and in his Vila’yat (guardianship), we will make you to drink the soft and fresh water and you will receive the blessings (of God) from up and under your feet, and if you do not stand firm your union will be destroyed and your enemies will get happy. (And because of Jewish sedition) you will follow Bani-israel in detail, even if they go to a hole of a lizard you will go there to follow them (and you will be abject.) good for the one who after me stands firm on the Vila’yat (guardianship) of Imam Ali (AS) until she/he dies and joins me that (with this status) I am satisfied with him/her.))

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:

In third volume of Ahl-e-bayt interpretation it is narrated from volume 33 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r by Majlesi that Prophet (PH) stated: ((in the paradise which is called Eden, no place is more honorable, higher and more close to the heaven of my God than my place; and we are 14 people there. My brother, Ali (AS) who is best of them and the most favorable of them to me, and me, Fatima (SA) who is the excellency of the women of the paradise, Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS) and nine Imams (AS) from the sons of Hussain (AS). We are 14 people there in one place, that God has removed badness from us and has made us pure. We are all guider and guided.)) Prophet (PH) continued his word: ((I, from God’s side, am publicist and they, from the honored and glorified God’s side and my side, are communicators. They are the proofs of the blessed and exalted God on his creatures and his witnesses in his earth and treasuries (owners) of his knowledge and the mines (core) of his wisdom. Anyone who obeys them, obeys God and anyone who defies them, defies God. The earth even as much as a blink of eyes does not remain without them, and does not reforms by anyone other than them. They report the ummah (society) from the issue of Halal (lawful) and Haram (unlawful) of their religion, guide them with the same (and not changed) orders in accordance with satisfaction of their God, forbid them from resent of God and there is no disagreement, dissension and struggle among them. The last of them will pick up my writing and the handwriting (writing) of my brother, Ali (AS), and they will inherit from each other until doomsday. All of the people of the earth are in ignorance, negligence, deviousness and amazement, unless they and their Shias (followers) and their friends. They do not need anyone of ummah (society) in anything of the issue of their religion, but ummah (society) needs them. They are the ones who are mentioned by God in his book (they are the meaning of parts of Quran) and God has conjoined their obedience with obeying himself and his Prophet (PH) and stated: ((أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters.)

Cause of revelation and expressing the verse:

In second volume of Kashf-ol-ghame and volume 50 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r similar narrations are narrated from God’s Prophet that dear God has made Prophet’s name accompanied with his name and made him copartner in God’s grant and has promised the same reward to the one who obey Prophet (PH) as the one who obey God. As such in these two verses stipulates both two mentioned points: (their censoriousness is because God and his Prophet made them needless to boodles.) Sura Tobe, verse 74 and in this verse mentions the speech of the one who has quitted the obeying of Prophet (PH) when he/she is burning in the fire of the hell: (I wish we have obeyed God and Prophet (PH).) Sura Ahaza’b, verse 66. The essence of the one who God has conjoined obeying himself in the verse:  أَطِیعُوا اللهَ وَ أَطِیعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَ أُولِی الْأَمْرِ مِنْکُمْ (do obey God and do obey Prophet (PH) and the guardians from yourselves.)  And in the verse

وَ لَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَی الرَّسُولِ وَ إِلی أُولِی الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ(but if they had referred to the messenger or to those who are guardians from themselves) and also in the verse إِنَّ اللهَ یَأْمُرُکُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَماناتِ إِلی أَهْلِه (verily God commanded you to render trusts to whom they are due)  and in the verse: if you do not know, ask people of books (referring to followers of other Prophets (AS)) Sura Anbia’, verse 7 with obeying of Prophet (PH) how can be described?

In volume 23 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, second volume of Oyoun akhba’r-o-Reza, first volume of Kama’l-o-din and also in Al-borha’n fi tafsir-el-Quran it is narrated from Imam Hasan Askari (AS) who narrated from his ancestors that Imam Baqer (AS) has stated: ((Prophet (PH) testate to Imam Ali (AS), Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS), then about the verse ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters) has stated: ((the meaning of أُوْلِي الأَمْرِ(guardians of matters) are the Imams (AS) from descendants of Ali (AS) and Fatima (SA), until the judgemental day.))

In first volume of Kashf-ol-ghame and also in volume 36 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r it is narrated that Abd-ol-ghafa’r-ibn-e-rostam has asked Imam Sadeq (AS) that: ((who is أُوْلِي الأَمْرِ(guardians of matters) in this verse?)) He answered: ((swear to God, Ali (AS) is one of them.))

In Kashf-ol-ghame and volume 50 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r similar narrations is narrated from Prophet of God that: ((the honored God set his name along with God’s name and made him partner in his benevolence and promised the one who obeys Prophet (PH)  the same reward as the one who obeys God; as so in these two verses has stipulated both matters: ((they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allah and his messenger had enriched them.)) Sura Tobe, verse 74. And in this verse narrates the speech of the one who quits obeying Prophet (PH), when he/she is burning among the fire in the hell: ((we wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Prophet (PH).)) Sura Ahza’b, verse 66. How can be described the depth of the one who God mentioned his obedience in this verse: ((أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters) and in the verse: ((وَ لَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَی الله و الی الرَّسُولِ وَ إِلی أُولِی الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمُ)) (if they had only referred it to the messenger, or to guardians (those charged with authority) among them) and also in the verse: ((إِنَّ اللهَ یَأْمُرُکُمْ أَنْ تُؤَدُّوا الْأَماناتِ إِلی أَهْلِها)) (indeed Allah commands you to deliver the trusts to their [rightful] owners.) Sura Nesa’, verse 58 and in the verse: ((if you do not realize this, ask those who possess the message (followers of other religions).) Sura Anbiya’, verse 7, the same as the obedience of Prophet (PH)?

In volume 23 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, second volume of Oyoon akhba’r-o-reza’, first volume of Kama’l-o-din and also Al-borha’n fi tafsir-el-Quran it is narrated from Imam Askari (AS) who has narrated from his great fathers that Imam Baqer (AS) stated: ((Prophet (PH) told his will to Ali (AS), Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS), then about this verse: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ   وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters) stated: ((the meaning ofاولی الامر  (guardians of matters), are Imams (AS) who are offspring of Ali (AS) and Fatima (SA) until judgmental day.))

In first volume of Kashf-ol-ghame and also in volume 36 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r it is narrated that Abd-ol-ghafa’r-ibn-e-qa’sem has asked Imam Sadeq (AS): ((who is اولی الامر  (guardians of matters) in this verse? )) Imam (AS) stated: ((swear to God, Ali (AS) is one of them.))

In volume 36 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, Majlesi has narrated from Prophet of God (PH) that he told to Imam Ali (AS): ((O Ali! Anyone who refuses your guardianship has refused my guardianship and anyone refuses my guardianship has refused God’s guardianship. O Ali! Obeying you is obeying me and obeying me is obeying God; so anyone obeys you has obeyed me and anyone obeys me has obeyed God and swear to God who has sent me on a mission, rightful, the friendship of we, Ahl-e-bayt (Prophet PH and his family), is worthier than jewelry and red ruby and emerald and God has taken the testament and promise of affection toward we, Ahl-e-bayt (Prophet PH and his family), in Om-ol-keta’b [and in world of pre-existence] and has recorded it and until judgmental day no one will be added to that group (of our lovers) nor anyone will be decreased and this is the very word of God that stated: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ   مِنكُمْ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters), which the meaning of اولی الامر منکم (your guardians of matters) is Ali (AS).))

Salim-ibn-e-qays said: ((I heard Imam Ali (AS) stated: ((the lowest level which a servant (of God) is seen as a believer, is that the almighty God introduces himself to he/she and the servant (of God) confesses to obeying him, and God’s Prophet (PH) introduces himself to she/he and he/she confesses to obeying of him and introduces his Imam (AS) and proof on the earth and his witness of the creatures to he/she and the servant (of God) confesses to obeying of him.)) I told: ((O Amir-ol-momenin (Ali AS)! If she/he is ignorant to everything other than what you has described, again the commandment is this?)) He stated: ((yes. If he/she is ordered to [do] something, she/he must obey the command and if he/she is prohibited from something, must accept it. But the lowest level which servant (of God) becomes infidel is that the thing which is prohibited by God, but servant (of God) supposing that God has ordered to it, stay bound to it and moreover, set it as her/his religion and claim that he/she is worshiping what  she/he has been ordered to. While indeed, he/she has worshiped Satan. And the lowest level which servant (of God) is astray in it, is that not realizing of the proof of God and his witness of the creatures and the one who God has made his (guardian’s) guardianship obligatory and has ordered people to obey him (guardian). God stated: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ   مِنكُمْ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters).)) I said: ((O Amir-ol-momenin (Ali AS)! May I be your ransom! Explain for me.)) Imam (AS) stated: ((the meaning of the verse are the ones who Prophet of God (PH) in his last sermon and at his death day stated: ((I remained two things for you; if you grab them, you never would be astray after me. The book of great God and my Ahl-e-bayt (Prophet PH’s family). The kind and omniscient God has promised me that they would not get separated until they enter me at [paradise’s] pond.))

This hadith has been narrated in Aql-e-salim by Salim-ibn-e-qays, second volume of Ka’fi by Koleyni, volume 66 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r by Majlesi and in Al-borha’n fi tafsir-el-Quran by Bahra’ni. Moreover, Maa’ni-ol-akhba’r has narrated this hadith too.

Aya’shi in first volume of Ka’fi, Majlesi in volume 35 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, Koufi in Tafsir-ol-for a’t and etc narrate from Aboo-basir that: ((I asked Imam Sadeq (AS) about the verse ((وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters.). He stated: (( (It) was descended about Ali-ibn-e-abita’leb (AS) and Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS).)) I told him: ((people say: then why God did not mention Ali and his Ahl-e-bayt (family) in his book?)) He stated: ((answer them that: prayer also was descended to Prophet (PH) without mentioning its being 3 or 4 Rakat (unit of prayer consisting of three postures), until Prophet (PH) himself interpreted it for people. Zaka’t was descended to Prophet (PH), without mentioning that 10 of every 40 Dirham should be put aside until again Prophet (PH) interpreted it. And Hajj was descended but God did not told about seven times Tava’f (circumambulation around holy Kabe) and it was Prophet (PH) that elaborated it for people. And the verse ((وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters) was descended about Ali-ibn-e-abita’leb (AS) and Hasan (AS) and Hussain (AS). Prophet (PH) told about Ali (AS) that: ((do know that anyone who I am his/her guardian, Ali (AS) is also her/his guardian.)) And stated: ((I advise you to book of God and my Ahl-e-bayt (family); since I required great God that until the day which they enter upon me in paradise, not make them separated and he (God) accepted my request.))

In Odat-o-da’i by Abi-masrooq it has narrated that: ((we told to Imam Sadeq (AS): ((we speak with people and present the verse ((وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) (Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters) as a reason. They answer in reply that: ((this verse has been revealed the commanders of war groups.)) we present the verse ((your real guardians are (no less than) Allah, his (God’s) messenger and the (fellowship of believers); those who pray and give Zakat, while they are bowing down (in worship).)) Sura Ma’ede, verse 55 as a proof. They tell: ((it has been revealed about believers.)) he (Aboo-basir) said: ((anything I had (to say) from this kind of subjects and those similar to them. he (Imam Sadeq (AS) ) stated: ((if it is as such you say, so invite them to Moba’hele (cursing eachother).))

In first volume of Daa’em-ol-Islam and also in third volume of Ahl-e-bayt (AS) interpretation it is narrated from Imam Baqer (AS) that about the verse ((وَ لَوْ رَدُّوهُ إِلَی الله و الی الرَّسُولِ وَ إِلی أُولِی الْأَمْرِ مِنْهُمْ لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِینَ یَسْتَنْبِطُونَهُ مِنْهُمْ)) (if they had only referred it to the messenger, or to guardians (those charged with authority) among them, the proper investigators would have tested it from them.) stated: ((they are Imams (AS) from Ahl-e-bayt (AS) (family of Prophet PH) who God mentioned them as people of knowledge that deduce and conceive knowledge; so (God) has made their obedience, obligatory and has stated: ((أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُم)) (do obey  your Prophet and your guardians of matters). ))

In first volume of Al-gharat it has narrated in a letter from Imam Ali (AS) to Moa’wiye that: ((from servant of God and commander of believers, Ali-ibn-e-abita’leb, to Moa’wiye… do know that they (the ones who Moa’wiye has mentioned to, in his letter) are themselves an obvious reason and proof that disclose the honesty of our speech oppositions, enemies and avoiders of us and oppressors to us and God is our helper; ((I rely on him and all of the ones who rely, must rely on him.)) (Sura Yusof, verse 67) and do know that all of which Prophet (PH) has communicated to people, was the order and command of his God that was command, religious law and obligatory which God has descended and (Imam Sadeq AS) shared [obedience in] religion in this way and stated: ((أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُم)) (do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters). )) is about we, Ahl-e-bayt (AS) (family of Prophet PH), (not you). ))

In volume 4 of Al-mana’qeb by Aboo-qasem isfaha’ni it has narrated that Hasan-ibn-e-sa’leh-ibn-e-hay went to Imam Sadeq (AS) and asked: ((O son of Prophet of God (PH)! Whar do you say about the verse ((أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ)) ((O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey your Prophet and your guardians of matters)? Who are Ol-ol-amr (guardians) that God has ordered us to obey them?)) He (Imam Sadeq AS) stated: the meaning are scholars.)) When the people who were beside Imam (AS) went out, Hasan-ibn-e-sa’leh told them: ((we have not done something else and did not so anything unless we have asked about it from scholars; so they returned and asked Imam (AS) again and Imam (AS) stated: (( (the meaning of scholars) are Imams (AS) from we,Ahl-e-bayt.))

In volume 43 of Beha’r-ol-anva’r, volume 27 of Vasa’el-o-Shia, first volume Al-ehteja’h and also in Al-ama’li by Sheykh tousi it has narrated that: ((I heard from Hesha’m-ibn-e-hassa’n that Imam Hasan (AS) after swear to allegiance by people told a sermon among them and stated: ((we are the prevailing party of God and the favorite family of Prophet (PH) and his pure  and holy Ahl-e-bayt (AS) (family of Prophet PH) and one of the Thaqaleyn which Prophet (PH) has remained among his ummah (society) and the other is God’s book which everything is said in detail and (no falsehood can approach it) Sura Fosselat, verse 42. We are the base and support of Quran’s interpretation, so have no doubt in its interpretation, rather, we are aware of its truths certainly. So, do obey us, since obeying us is obligatory, because it is connected to obeying God and his Prophet (PH); God has stated: ((يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ الله وَأَطِيعُواْ الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الأَمْرِ مِنكُمْ فَإِن تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى الله وَالرَّسُول لَعَلِمَهُ الَّذِینَ یَسْتَنْبِطُونَهُ مِنْهُمْ ِ)) (O believers! Do obey God and (also) do obey  your Prophet and your guardians of matters; so anytime you have disagreement in your (religious) matters, if you have faith to God, present it to your God (‘s book) and your Prophet (‘s tradition).)) (If they had only referred it to the messenger, or to guardians (those charged with authority) among them, the proper investigators would have tested it from them.)
